Why is design communication so important?

The greatest ideas are only ever as good as the audience’s ability to understand them. Therefore, it makes sense for the quality of communication to match the quality of the ideas themselves.

This is especially relevant when trying to bridge the gap between designers and non-designers.

Poor communication leads to confusion, distrust and friction between designer and client. Design meetings become a chore and take much longer than needed because there is a lack of understanding.

Good communication leads to strong, trusting relationships, it allows the process to be smooth and enjoyable because everyone knows where they are and where they’re going.

We are designers and have spent years in industry working with other designers. We speak the language.

We understand the tools that architects and interior designers use as well as the latest technology for rendering, modeling and animation.

We use this knowledge to find the best strategy to communicate a design, depending on the designer, the project, and the audience.

How do we assist design communication?

Smaller design studios are often focused on delivering projects with limited resources. It’s become more common for these studios to work in 3D but project documentation is still inevitably 2D as this is the default communication format for construction projects.

We work alongside studios providing 3D spatial, material and light explorations from the beginning of the design process. These studies are used to communicate the concept proposal alongside typical 2D drawings.

Clients typically respond decisively and enthusiastically to 3D imagery, as it is easier to understand than 2D drawings. This helps keep the process engaging and maintains project momentum.

Spatial modelling not only assists the client in understanding the proposal but often helps the design team to iterate multiple ideas and identify and overcome future problems before presenting to clients.
